3D Animation for Oil & Gas Refinery: Pipe Insulation & Jackets

Our 3D design studio was brought in to create a photorealistic 3D industrial animation. The goal was to demonstrate the insulation’s inner layering, thermal retention properties, and quick-latch mechanical fittings. Through motion graphics and dynamic cutaways, we brought a complex engineering concept to life. The finished asset gives engineering teams and sales representatives a visual tool to demonstrate insulation layering, mechanical fastenings, and thermal efficiency.

The Engineering & Visual Challenge

Explaining the benefits of removable insulation jackets through 2D diagrams or site photography is difficult. Physical photos only show the outer fabric shell, completely hiding the internal engineering that justifies the product’s price point.

Our client needed a visual medium that could reveal internal material layers and demonstrate how their product handles extreme operating temperatures without disrupting plant operations.

Overcoming CAD Complexity

The client’s engineering team provided raw 3D CAD models without detailed geometry, such as chamfers, rounded corners, carvings, etc. We added all the details in CAD software (we use Fusion 360 or SolidWorks), so 3D visualization will be realistic and precise. containing dense geometry and millions of polygons.

Next, our 3D artists retopologized the 3D models, transforming heavy industrial engineering files into clean, render-ready 3D models while preserving exact dimensional accuracy for every valve, flange, and strap.

Visualizing Invisible Heat

The primary creative hurdle was rendering thermal conductivity and temperature retention—forces invisible to the naked eye.

Using custom shader graphs and dynamic color gradients, we rendered cold surfaces in deep blues and extreme thermal loads in glowing reds. Viewers can instantly observe how the insulation jacket traps heat within the pipe wall, preventing energy waste.

Peel-Back & Exploded Views

To highlight the product’s installation, we animated an automated “peel-back” motion sequence. The inner mineral wool insulation section dissolves in mid-air, exposing the needle-punched fiber core, high-temp thread seams, and heat-resistant inner lining.

Exploded views further showcase quick-release mechanical latches, demonstrating how maintenance crews can remove and reattach the insulation during plant turnarounds.
